I have a twelve week old Gordon Setter puppy I named Isabella. As this name is too long for training and everyday use, I'm going to use a two syllable nickname or call name for her. The ones I thought of were Bella or Izzy. A friend of mine told me to use Izzy because dogs respond better to names that end in an "e" sound. Is this at all true? Which name is better? She was very calm when we took her to the pet store, but at home and at play she is quite spunky and humorous. I asked my family and friends, but they are divided pretty much 50% to 50%. Some help or advice please!

I've heard most dogs respond better to a hard consonant in their name. I think Bella would be better for training.

this is a 50/50 in my eyes. i have heard both names many times in my experience with dogs and both work great. it more comes down to the personality of the dog. i personally go for 'e' names(ollie, riley, levi, charlie) but a well pronounced vowel for any sort will do the trick. Izzy may get hard to say sometimes, so i would go for bella. plus i think it fits the nobel sort of essence a setter has. good luck with the training!

I thought that Peggy gave you very good advice ... I also prefer an 'eee' sound on the end as it seems easier to call ... but if the Iz bit at the beginning is going to be a problem - why not just add the B of Bella & call her Bizzy for short?

I expect she's definately going to be that ... busy playing, busy making you laugh, busy making you love her & loving you.

(Beezy? - perhaps not Belly, lol)

[Oh, just thought - it only doesn't work if you decide to use the phrase 'get busy' to encourage her to go to the bathroom.]

What does she currently respond to? You might find that she shows a preference for one name over the other. That might be a very good way to choose.

I like Izzy! It's cute!

I'm not sure about the "e" thing, but I know sounds are important to a dog. My mutt's name was Kokomo (Kokomo Jo when he was naughty) and he listened just fine.
