Well, if you're really referencing the Bible here, keep on reading! You get to where the world was destroyed by a flood right? Then, the tower of babel. Remember, the pride of man grew amazingly strong and they rebelled against God so God confused the people's speech. Different people groups then moved all over the earth the ones speaking the same lanugage sticking with their own group because they could understand each other - the geography of the planet was different at that time and there were ways to even simply travel by land to different parts of the earth and as they did - they no longer mixed with everyone genetically and developed their own dominant traits and subcultures. That's why so many different early people groups all over the world have similiar stories of the world being destroyed by a flood and the tower of babel and so forth. Mutation and natural selection. As people moved out into hotter, sunnier climates, people with darker skin made more desirable mates in certain areas. And in colder areas, skin color was less important so less selection occurred. And incidentally, who says Adam and Eve were white? I think it is fairly unlikely that they looked like the fair skinned cartoon characters in my Sunday school book when I was a kid. It's hard to believe that there are still religious people today who would condemn inter-racial marriage despite the mountain of evidence that it's not important to God.

Some believe that Adam and Eve were the first people created, but that God created more in the same fashion and it just wasn't relevant enough to elaborate on in the Bible.
