It's my parent's cat. They need help. Cat's already home and doesn't like old clay litter. Is trying to find places around the house to pee and poo. He's an indoor cat. What should they do?

If the cat is still healing from the ridiculous mutilation, I mean de-clawing procedure, you should be using only shredded newspapers for litter until the cat has healed. The cat just had every digit amputated at the first knuckle. I can understand why he doesn't much relish the idea of digging right now. The newspaper will be easier for him to dig around in and help protect him from infection while he heals.

My cats didn't care for shredded paper. I used the crystals and that seemed to work. The Yesterday's News sounds very good though.

To these responses that it is a terrible thing to do... Let me say that I have had two cats declawed- front only. It is a 10 minute procedure that they awake with painful paws. It goes away in a few days to a week and I never had problems with litter box usage after. The back claws were left in incase they ever got outside. They defend themselves with back claws. My cats are healthy and happy.

If he has just been declawed try shredded nespaper for the first week to 2 weeks...his paw may be too sensitive for the grain of normal kitty litter...once the paws have completely healed you can go back to what ever you were using before....also you will need to change the litter at least once a day....good luck

Using newspaper in her litterbox greatly reduces the chance of infection and allows for more comfort as normal kitty litter can become trapped in her nail beds and between her toes and cause extreme pain and discomfort, and can induce serious infection. Using paper litter can greatly reduce her discomfort and this should be used for at least one week after surgery(10-14 days would be better).

It is not necessary to shred the paper, just folding a newspaper in half in her litterbox will be sufficient and will add to her comfort and safety. Most veterinarians also carry processed newspaper litter, such as "Yesterday's News" that is inexpensive and convenient to use. Examine her paws and nail beds daily for bleeding, oozing of pus, or swelling and notify your vet immediately if you notice any of these signs.

Hope this helps :)

You should tell them to get "Yesterday's News",
our cat had a bad infection and could not use the clay litter. It is great for cat's and this would be perfect for your parent's cat!
Good Luck!

First of all, it's disgusting they declawed him. It is literal mutilation of their fingers and toes, and is illegal in most countries for obvious reasons.
The reason why he won't use his litter is because it HURTS to go in his litter box and kick to cover his droppings. He is now going to associate the pain with the litterbox, and will be going around the house.
Contact a vet for further advice. This is very common for people who decide to put their cat under this painful and traumatic surgery. Changing his brand of litter (aside from the shredded newspaper advice) is not going to do a thing.

Shredded newspaper only! Clay litter can get up inside their paws where the stitches are and they could get infected. You won't have to use the newspaper that long, so it's better to be safe than sorry.

Don't use litter. For the first week or two use shredded newspaper and change it at least every day. It has to be shredded, cats like to bury their waste, so folded won't work for long

Lock him up for a few days and use shredded newspaper. This is to keep litter from entering the wounds. Then use his regular litter after a week.

The old-fashioned way is to shred newspaper - cats have always liked to go on shredded paper. Put a couple of inches of it into their little box.
