Big Bear is a 2-2.5 hour windy drive away from LA.

Mountain High is about 2 hours.

Several other smaller ones within the same area (Mt. Baldy, Snow Summit, etc.)

Mammoth is about a 3.5-4 hour drive north.

Then you have the Tahoe area, which is an hour flight to Reno, then about an hour bus ride to the lake.

PS - There's also a small ski area near Las Vegas.

Big Bear Mountain and Mountain High are the closest ski resorts to LA. Mountain High, located in Wrightwood, is closer than Big Bear, and cheaper in costs but Big Bear usually has better powder.

Big Bear is the closest being about a 2hr drive, its good for a fun day, or weekend of skiing, however you will deal with LOTS of people being that its so close to LA... However you can drive a day, and be in Mammoth, which is world class, and very very nice

Big Bear--- East of Los Angeles (just east of San Bernadino) is the closest and a quite popular area...try it and if you don't like it you can travel further away from the city....There is Big Bear Lake, Big Bear City, Big Bear Airport and Big Bear Ski Area.
