hi, im an international student from japan.

i was just wondering why canadian people, especially
torontonians, brag about their winter so much.

They make it sound like toronto has one of the fiercest
winter among all the major cities around the world.

toronto is not so cold. it hasnt even snowed or gone down below 0 celcius, where as most of other regions in north east asia(hokkaido and korea), which is about same or lower latitude than toronto, has already snowed really heavily.

i think toronto can hardly be qualified as a part of the great north. besides it sucks so much in hockey.

also, it makes me laugh when i find so many torontonians
dont even know that they have alot of snow in major cities in north east asia like tokyo or seoul.

so whats with torontonians and their mild winter?

Well Im a Montrealer first of all, Im not from Toronto. In Canada, Torontonians believe thye are the center of the universe, they think thye are God's gift to North America, but dont even get me started about how they arent.
It doesn't snow or drop below zero in T.O because of all the pollution, montreal is well on its way, but we get alot more snow here and the temperature does drop pretty low. Quebec has some of the best ski conditions in the world, so the quality of our snowfall is pretty good. Last winter we had one day go to -40, now thta was cold!

Oh, and unfortunatly, the Maple Leafs are actually doing pretty good this season, but dont worry they will choke in the post season, just like every year! hahaha

ur kiding right???? it has gone over 0 celcius here several several several times. haha. ok it's not the best in hockey either, we haven't one scince 67 i believe.. but whatever the local teams arre the sh*t and we are the best national team in the world, for men and women accoriding the last olympics. also because of the tilt and position of the earth according to the sun, it makes snce why our winter is a little late this season compared to other places. and trust me, i'm already wearing my winter coat every day. and it was snowing the other day lightly, and there was a little snow on the ground this mornig so :P

lol Its because us real Northern Canadians are always laughing at how Toronto thinks they have a winter, so they try to compensate by exaggerating to people who they seem to think dont know what winter is..... I have lived in both Southern and Northern Ontario for equal portions of my lifetime, and I can honestly tell you that it is really funny to hear people talk about southern winter as fierce and cold when it is nothing compared to winter further north. They thought 6 inches of snow and -15C was a crazy winter...lmao. A lifelong torontonian wouldnt know what cold and snow was if it slapped them in the face. I didnt know what real winter was until I moved farther north and I can tell you that after living in 3 feet of snow and -45C all winter long I laughed my butt off at all the southern ontarians complaining about thier meager winter weather.... still they think that it is other people who are exaggerating, until they finally experience real winter. So its best to just shrug off thier bragging because they really have no clue what winter is and they are just exaggerating because they think that Canada represents winter everywhere when it really doesnt have a harsh winter in the south and they look foolish claiming it does.... lol

PS we really do have winters worth bragging about but the people that live in those areas dont bother bragging because no one believes us until they experience it themselves..... I am still arguing with my relative from southern ontario who thinks they have winters that are super cold, even though I know the difference because I have lived in both areas... he will get a good shock when they visit this winter I cant wait to see him freeze his *** off...lol

It's easier to boast about the cold weather in Toronto, or the rain in Vancouver, or the mosquitos in Manitoba, than to sit around and moan about them. Sure, people know that Toronto isn't the coldest city in the world. Not even the coldest city in Canada, but if you haven't got much else to boast about, you use what you can.
Lucky you to have such an interesting first-hand basis for comparison!

Well, there are many other Canadian sites that would be able to talk about cold winters with more authority than Toronto. It's still colder than most American cities, but you're right, it's pretty mild this year so far. It will get colder soon, don't you worry.

Toronto is located in the southernmost parts of Canada. It is not very cold in comparison to other places. Ottawa is said to be the second coldest capital on earth after Moscow. You think Seoul is cold? Try Iqaluit or Winnipeg.
BTW, I don't get on here and insult other countries. Have some respect. You don't like Toronto? Leave then.

SF Dude is right. Toronto is the centre of the Universe.
They have a little snow and they have to call in the army.
Let them go to Yellowknife for a couple of months, then they know what snows is and how to deal with it. I love it there.

Grey Cup game in Winnipeg last Sunday....
Temperature 6 deg Celsius...No snow on the ground. Toronto reporter (which I will not name) arrives in Winnipeg, and is "dumb-founded" that it's not cold, and that the taxi is not equipped with tire chains.......Was this one of the more intelligent reporters that the centre of the universe has to offer????? He probably spent the weekend looking for the Argo's game plan.
