I think it refers to u not being greedy or being to attached to physical things. For example a person might be in need or just hint that he/she likes something of yours. If your greedy you might not even want to talk about the subject cause you already know where it's headed. If your attached you might be willing to give that person something else. If your a giving person you'll be able to weigh out the other persons necessity or interest in the object over yours. Giving full hearted, can bring you peace, love, joy and no regrets. But that's only if you do it full heartily. All & all i think the quote is a religious quote, and basically means you cant keep any earthly matter. If u can give willingly then its probably because you've realized that there is someone or something greater than you. If you ask me the most valuable thing anyone can give is their time. What u gain from giving what u cant keep, I think is a lifetime of peace, loves, & laughs, and at the end of it all an eternal life of happiness.

Hmmm good question.
To me, this sounds like a religious or theological quote. I think it refers to giving up material possessions in favour of the lasting virtues of enlightenment, wisdom, or God.
To elaborate - material possessions and the material world are finite. The things we own are not immutable. We can lose them, and they may inhibit us from discovering the things that are pure, eternal, and lasting. You could see these as being wisdom, enlightenment, or God depending on your spiritual beliefs. In short, a man who relinquishes the material world to find these higher, infallible virtues is a smart man.

HMMM...that is an interesting and beautiful quote. I personally love quotes and think that this could mean that one cannot hold on to something that does not want to stay and it is better to let something go and gain the freedom, and lack of heartache, then to hold onto something that does not want to stay.
Maybe?? :)
Good luck!

You can't keep your life or material possessions and if you give them to the poor and needy when you die you cannot lose your final reward, which is heaven.

It is not foolish to give something up that is temporary to gain something permanent.

i think it is talking about compromise. what it could mean is that it is better to have something that is worse than to have to contiually work to keep something that is better.
