I heard once it goes out, stops working, it can't be replaced with like a new bulb etc. Is this true?

You can change the whole LCD panel because for LCD TV the backlight comes together with the LCD panel.
But actually the backlight can be change if you can get the part.

I don't think that it is true, I changed the bulb by a sony professional for my sony lcd tv. It works great.

This is true. A DLP bulb can be replaced LCD's and PLASMA cannot.
