Can dogs have asthma? It seems my dachshund does. She woke up from a deep sleep and just started having a five minute huffing episode. Blowing into her nostrils seemed to calm her down, but I'm worried. She's had smaller episodes before, but this one seemed portentous. I am taking her to the vet as soon as possible, but has anyone had any experience or advice on this?

While common in cats, asthma is actually quite rare in dogs.

Certain breeds (Dachshunds are one of them) are susceptible to something called reverse sneeze, however. It looks very much like a severe asthma attack, and is usually related to excitement. Calming them down makes it go away. If she woke up with it from a deep sleep, it was probably triggered by a dream/'nightmare' in which she was chasing something or being chased.

Chest x-rays to look at the lungs, bloodwork, and other diagnostic tests are almost always perfectly normal in these dogs. Although very scary to witness, there are no known harmful effects.

P.S. There is an outside chance this might have been a type of seizure. It would be a good idea to videotape an episode and take it with you to your appointment.

Good luck!

Sounds like either what they call Kennel Cough or small dogs like that will have bronchial spasms, I breed Yorkies and Boston Terriers and they both do the same. Its not fatal, just calming them down helps. Be careful when blowing into her nose, you can put to much air into her lungs and kill her that way.
