First, I'm a U.S. Citizen from birth, English is my first language. I also speak Esperanto, Spanish, and German.
Pros:
Lazy people don't have to make the effort to learn a second language.
Cons:
English is a difficult language to learn as a second language because of the excessive number of gramatical rules, and the massive number of exceptions to those rules. It would take someone years to become fluent in English unless they are extremely talented at learning languages.

Pros:
1. English is spoken in more countries than almost any other.
2. It is one of the five most spoken languages as either native, second or third language.
3. Its flexibility allows it to say more concepts and ideas than any other language; it has the largest vocabulary with more than 800,000 words.
Cons:
1. English has horrendous grammar, making it difficult for non-speakers to learn.
2. English has little or no phonetic spelling, etc. etc.
3. English is seen as a language of imperialism, first the British and now the Yanks.
4. English is fading language as western influence fades. Within decades, the number of Spanish speakers in South *and* North America will outnumber the English speakers. As well, South America is a rising economic power. In time, Spanish may replace English as the "global language". Even Arabic may be more useful, since it's spoken from as far west as Morocco to as far east as Afghanistan and is the Lingua Franca of muslims.

The Pros are obvious. One language that all speak, write, read and understand would be wonderful. No more miscommunications due to translation error!
The Cons are just as obvious. Why should anyone be forced to learn a language that is not their own? Here in America don't we complain, loudly and bitterly, that our children are forced to learn spanish to be abe to get by? That the products in our markets are printed in spanish for a population that is NOT legally here? Or who refuse to learn the language? Also, LOL, Americans would need to learn English, as what we speak is American.
Seems to me the Cons have it.
*please bear in mind that I am not complaining about spanish speaking people, just pointing out that no one wants to feel obligated to learn another language. It is, and should remain, a choice.

Pros :
- in the US you tend to think that you are alone and thus you try to impose your culture, money and language to others.
- good for nero-minded people or lazy people
Cons :
- a language is part of your culture, your identity. I'm french and proud of my language. It's part of me.
- learning other languages opens yourself to others cultures, peolple. You can share things
- try to go inside China in small village speaking only your Texan American English, you won't be able to do anythng as nobody will understand you.
- even in England, you learn another language at school.
- for the person who complained about learning Spanish in the US. Don't forget that Hispanic persons represent a great part in your economy.
- speaking other languages can help you get a job. Between two identical profile, the one that knows other language will be more usefull.

People take pride in their languages...
Even though English is far more logical and organized than the Asian and eastern languages, people would still not appreciate it.
Any language without an Alphabet should be forgotten though.
