It can cause a person to become more compassionate, more human. This could have made Hester an even better mother. Certainly a better community member.

But punishment is not guaranteed to positively affect someone's life. When one wants to impact someone's life, there are generally better ways to go about it, more sure ways. But that was not the theme of the story.

If people had to wear jackets with the letter "A" on them now, then it may be a good thing. Cause...it's like A+! Good job!

Felons cannot vote. Felons cannot have a passport sometimes and also some of them cannot have a driver's license

Sex offenders have all sorts of restrictions; their lives are eternally messed up.
