What position do the religious buildings in Bangkok have in the urban fabric?

It is an integral part of each building. Not that noticeable to the western eye. When you say religious buildings I will stretch it to mean religious structures. Each building, house, hotel, or office has a Spirit house near it or close to it. And within each house there is usually something similar. Because over 90 percent of the people in Thailand are buddhist and any religion is tolerated. You actually see religion related or influenced structures all over Bangkok. Depends on your point of view of what the influence is.
