Quite old fashioned as others have said, and yes, sweet. Also it takes a lot of pressure off both of you. In you are a scoundrel who is only out for a fast snog, and an even faster something more, then it is offputting.
But at least you know now you are dating a lady. I would really appreciate her!

Old fashioned if it's a first date.
Very old fashioned second date onwards.
There have been cases (I know of one) when in time the girlfriend and chaperone swapped places, and the newly appointed chaperone was promptly dismissed from her "job".
