I have a Playstation 2 game that I really want to play, but it is scratched. What item that is commonly found in a house can I use to remove it, or will I just need to get a scratch remover kit.

I have used rubbing alcohol or window cleaning solution with great success.
It is best to wipe the disc beginning from the inner part of the disc to the outer edge using a cotton swab (versus wiping the disc in a circular motion)

I read online the about using Turtle Wax [car polish] or tooth paste to 'buff out' those nasty surface scratches on a DVD/CD.
But never tried it. SO I'm not sure if it works.
Toothpaste is abrasive and if you aren't careful, you may cause more harm than good.

I've personally tried two of the store-bought kits:
one that removes a very fine layer of plastic from the disc [thereby removing small surface scratches];
the other kit is one that you rotate using a crank and spray the surface of the disc with a solution in order to fill the scratches. With the results I've had from either of these kits,
but I'm sure a damp cloth would have equally produced the same result.

I've tried a lot of things for this, tooth paste, furniture polish, etc. and most just end up making it worse. There are two things I've found that work most of the time. I've done with with music cd's and PS2 games that were skipping or otherwise not working correctly and have had pretty good success. They are hair gel or old car wax.

Baking soda toothpaste

Car wax

Read the link below for information on using the above materials to remove scratches. I preferred car wax!

Brasso. Rub it on with an old sock or rag for 3-4 minutes. Wash it off with soap and water. I've fixed probably 30-40 CD's using this method. You can find Brasso in most grocery stores, hardware stores, general merchandise stores, etc...cost is about $2.

I've tried most all the popular methods...CD repair kits, toothpaste, etc...Brasso beats 'em all and is super cheap. You could probably repair dozens of CD's and DVD's with one can of Brasso.
