A magnet has an electro-magnetic field that goes from the North pole to the South pole of the magnet.
A cassette tape has iron oxide particles that will align according to a magnetic field.
Passing a strong enough field near a cassette tape will re-align all the particles at one time in the same direction, which erases the previous polarity, and in so doing, eliminate the sound that is generated by the changes in that polarity when read by the read-head of the cassette player.
Any magnet that is strong enough will do the job.

;-D Try it out. Just gently rub the magnet across the cassette and then play it. If there is still sound, then your magnet is not strong enough.
