When I was in school, I was as kind and polite as I could possibly be to all of the girls I knew. I would smile, try to be pleasant, open the door for ladies (my mother would slap me if I didn’t), etc. However, despite these actions I was generally very shy. Even when there was a girl whom I liked, I would consciously and carefully avoid showing any special attention to her. I would just try to look for signs that she liked me and that it was *okay* with her for me to like her.

I hope this helps. It is possible for seemingly outgoing guys to actually be very shy. It’s a form of cover-up.

Well if it's the change in how you treat your girlfriend/wife will stem from how comfortable you are when you are around them. Men are usually more comfortable around their wife because that type of relationship is more solid (usually) and men are usually not afraid to show who they really are to their wife. Also the wife' will know more about your mannerisms than someone is is just your girlfriend. I'm automatically assuming that the relationship between a married couple is longer than that of a boyfriend-girlfriend couple. The change in how you treat each other is just a bi-product of the natural progression of the relationship.
