My 10 lb Yorkie ate about 1/4 of my Hershey's chocolate bar w/almonds. My old dog ate a whole plate of chocolate chip cookies without anything happening to him, so I'm not sure if I should worry too much. Of course, my old dog was a german shepeherd, 10 times larger than my current dog! So, give me some advice, please. I cannot bring him to the vet on the account of I cannot drive, and my father is out. I called him and he says to not worry! So I don't know here.. should I just let him be and see what happens? or what?

Chocolate is bad for dogs, but it does take a pretty solid dose- Dark Chocolate and baker's chocolate contain more of the stuff in chocolate that is bad than the milk chocolate in the Hershey's bar, so if your vet says not to worry, then don't.
Let him be, and just watch his appetite and his stools, so that if he does get sicker you'll have complete info to give the vet.

Yorkie will be just fine. Watch out for loose stool. The chocolate might be too rich for such a small dog. Try and not let that happen though. Check out the link below for more information. Good luck.

my friend, do not let people tell you it is no big deal, obviously they have not gone through a loss of a dog because of chocolate. The toxic chemical in chocolate it is NOT CAFFEINE but another chemical called THEO-BROMINE and it can kill your dog in less than 24 hours if it has an intense poisoning, the only thing the vet can do for this is give him activated charcoal and have it vomit the chocolate, it happened to me and i lost Max that way a hefty 100 pounds boxer.

10 lb is pretty small and 1/4 chocolate bar is a fair bit for a small dog. If you can't TAKE the dog to the vet, you should atleast CALL and ask for advice on what to do. If they tell you to come in; call your dad again and tell him you called the vet and they told you to come in ASAP or something.

If you're really worried, give your dog a SMALL amount of hydrogen peroxide so that he throws it up before it gets too far into his system. My 11 year old beagle has eaten an entire box of Dove chocolates, an entire pizza, and a box of thin mints (on separate occasions), and a small dose of hydrogen peroxide made her throw up, along with the food. But I really think a small amount like that won't hurt him.

The toxic ingredient for dogs in chocolate is Caffeine. Watch your dog for signs of caffeine overdose such as rapid heartbeat, shaking, excessive urination, excessive thirst, listlessness, (due to weakness), rapid eye movements, seizures, etc. If your dog gets any of these symptoms you sould take the dog to a vetrinary emergency clinic as soon as possible.

You know, people make way too big of a deal over dogs eating chocolate. The reality of it is, a dog would have to eat near his own weight in chocolate for it to kill him. Don't worry about it, hun. The worst thing that'll happen is it'll make him sick to his stomach and he'll throw up. My dogs get pieces of chocolate all the time, sneaking them out of the cupboard or off the table and they're just fine, it didn't even make them sick. Listen to your dad! It's not a big deal.
