A Coconut has a very tough wooden like shell with a thin layer of white substance that covers the inside of the shell and is filled with coconut milk. A Chestnut has a spiny cover that opens up when it drys with 2-4 nuts inside. The nuts are in a thin wooden shell and can be roasted and cracked open and ate.

A coconut is hollow, and a chestnut is separated by thin membranes in the middle. Also, a coconut has liquid in the middle of it.
