Driving shoes are a category that is in the gray zone of shoes. They can be ised to describe most thin soled moccasins, or loafers. They usually are a lite, comfortable and somewhat sensitive through the sole shoe that gives you a feel for the pedals in a vehicle. Now real driving shoes are shoes of the like worn by racing drivers such as those made by Simpson Racing. They mostly conform to some standard for support and accident protection as well as being fire resistent. check them out.

You can wear them for street use, but they will wear out very quickly. The soles are very thin and flexible so that the driver gets maximum feel of the pedals through the soles. Oddly enough, bowling shoes have similar soles and also wear out very quickly if used for street wear. As for them screwing up your feet, it is true that they have little, or no arch support.
