"Eating too much chocolate can be harmful to a dog. The darker the chocolate, the more of the toxin theobromine is present. Baking chocolate is the deadliest, white chocolate is the least.
Signs of toxicity occur within hours after a dog eats a sufficient amount of chocolate. Signs include vomiting, diarrhea, increased heart rate, rapid breathing, muscle tremors, seizures, and coma. If a high enough quantity of theobromine is eaten, the dog could die from cardiac arrest.
The approximate toxic dose of four types of cholcolate for a 20-pound dog:
*White chocolate has very little theobromine, and the dog would have to eat more than two and half times its body weight to reach toxic levels.
*A little less than one pound of milk chocolate.
*As little as six ounces of instant cocoa or semi-sweet chocolate.
*Two one-ounce squares of baking chocolate.
If you know your dog has eaten a questionable quantity of chocolate, take it to a vet immediately."

Why Dogs Can't Eat Chocolate
By: Dr. Dawn Ruben
Six ounces of semi-sweet chocolate can be toxic to the nervous system of a 20-pound dog.
Section: Chocolate is Toxic to Dogs
The worst a Hershey bar can do to you is add an inch to your hips. But that same candy – even in relatively small amounts – can make a dog or cat very sick. Make no mistake: For them, chocolate is poison.
In addition to a high fat content, chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, two different types of stimulants that affect the central nervous system and the heart muscle, as well as increasing the frequency of urination.
Symptoms of Poisoning
If your 50-pound dog gets his paws on a single chocolate-chip cookie, it probably won't cause him serious problems. However, if he gobbles up more – a pan of brownies, say – he may develop vomiting or diarrhea.
Once toxic levels are reached, the stimulants kick in, and this is when you really have to worry. Symptoms include: restlessness, hyperactivity, muscle twitching, increased urination and/or excessive panting. If your pet isn't treated, he could go into a seizure – possibly even die.

Yes it is poison! It has a cumulative effect, so even if the dog doesn't get visibly sick now, it is still affecting your pet. The darker the chocolate, the worse it is for your dog. It's the cocoa that's so bad.
Some other things you should never give your dog are:
anything with caffeine in it
onions (makes their red blood cells explode)
coffee grounds
grapes
raisins
Ibuprofen (leading cause of death by poisoning for dogs)
For some dogs, you'll see a negative effect right away, but for others you won't, but this does not mean it's not harmful - just means that you can't see the harm.
We know that smoking is bad for us, but when someone smokes a cigarette, they don't die on the spot.
Giving these things to your dog is similar to you eating a little bit of rat poison every day - it will kill you.
Please don't let your dog have these things.

Every dog owner I know tells me that chocolate is poison for dogs. I have a feeling, however, that one oreo cookie won't do much harm. A friend of mine's dog ate a bunch of chocolate that she had hidden from him and he was okay. Just no more cookies for puppy after this.

Chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats. Eventually the chocolate will kill your dog out right! If you "must" give your dog chocolate get your dog carob instead. Carob is sold in a catalog called Drs.Foster&Smith or on the internet at Drs.Foster&Smith.com. Carob looks like chocolate but isn't and it won't poison your dog either.
Good luck to you and your dog! May the two of you become lasting friends with each other for many years to come!

Dude, your lucky you didn't give it too much that time. I would not suggest doing it again. They are unable to digest it properly and it is considered a poison to animals. You could probably eat a little poison and not die too, but all living things crave the things they are allergic to, the most. Intoducing chocolate to your pet is not the greatest idea, he'll crave it now and possibly try and get to it when your not around. If he eats too much, the dog will die.

I gave my dog chocolate a few times but it was ok nothing happened. Is that your statement? If so you're lucky. Chocolate is toxic to dogs and different dogs can handle different levels of toxicity. Don't give your dog chocolate in the future.

A low dose probably won't hurt much, but it is NOT good for your dog. Please be very careful.
"Each holiday season, veterinarians witness an increase in accidental chocolate poisoning in dogs. The majority of pet owners do not realize the potential for intoxication that chocolate possesses."
"The the first signs of chocolate poisoning are vomiting and diarrhea, increased urination and nausea. These can progress to cardiac arrhythmias and seizures."

well, if dogs eat too much, then it is bad. Chocolate is still bad if they had a little, although too much they could die. If you have a little dog dont let it have chololate like at all. it the dog is bigger, it is ok, but it still isnt good to give a dog chocolate. Hope this helps
