Alitalia's service is not very consistent.
So, you can have a great or bad experience.
Usually they have problems with delays and lost luggage. But most of their fleet is quite new (especially long haul) and they are members of SkyTeam ( Air France/Continental/KLM/Delta,etc).

I've flown Alitalia a few times. I found them to be a good airline - good service, no issues, etc... I wouldn't hesitate to book a flight with them again.

I disagree with the above answer. I flew ALitalia numerous times when i lived in Italy. They have great, relaiable service! Not as cheap fares as some airlines in Europe, but are considerably cheap ($50~100 one way, and often cheaper) I flew them from Naples-Rome, Rome-London, London-Madrid, Madrid-Venice, Venice-Warsaw and Warsaw-Rome. Great service, great airline. There are better, but i'd reccommend it.
