Akitas will get along with smaller, non aggressive type dogs, such as French bulldogs, Pugs, Boston terriers, Poodles, and other non-sporting dogs..I wouldn't recommend most terriers..

Akitas, along with the other sledding breeds, usually fall into the "bad reputation" barrel when it comes to having other dogs with them.

Let me point out that, just like people, dogs are individuals, and, as with people, one dog in the newspaper can ruin the image of the whole breed. This includes all the self-proclaimed "experts" you may run into that could well tell you there's no way to have another dog. Since you're asking here, it shows me you're already doing some research, and I urge you to get more in-depth; looking at the AKC breed standard for personality, reading up on some Akita breed club sites, etc..

What it boils down to is this: Have you properly socialized your dog with other dogs in different environments, and encouraged good canine manners? Does your dog have a job (training, even if it's a basic "sit") that it performs for you? Do you feel comfortable enough in your pack structure (leadership) with your Akita to introduce another dog into your home and maintain control and civility in both dogs?

I had the privelege to study under one of the world's top dog trainers, and the one thing she told me through every dog purchase I made while under her was, "Go with your gut feeling." That may sound a bit odd, but if you make yourself informed before you go pick out your puppy, that gut feeling won't lie.

The Akita can be a very aggressive dog towards other dogs. It should not be left alone with other household pets. You will need to socialize your new pup and your Akita properly for them to accept each other.

If I recall correctly, Akitas can be a little territorial and high strung, similar to Chow Chows but it can be done. I had an Aunt who had a Chow and a Husky/Courgi mix and they got along just fine. I'd recommend a dog similar in size, though, just to be sure your Akita doesn't think he/she can push around your other dog.

the breed doesn't matter. as long as you have strong leadership and she minds you you won't have trouble. but know your Akitas mind. be honest with yourself about her personality and temperment. we all think we have the best dogs/kids/cats of all the others, but we shouldn't be totally blind to their faults. if your Akita is dog aggressive when she meets others or overly protective of you, getting another dog may not be a wise choice.

If you get it when it's young, there's a better chance of acceptance. Akita's are known for being a one-person dog--so there's the chance it will get jealous.

Do your research. The little I did said they are wonderful dogs, but strong willed and aggressive to other dogs.
