To each his/her own.
However, I think 'the girl' should devote some time to the area in order to appear fresh, presentable, clean, etc.
And do not shave. You will soon get irritation; use a dipilatory, wax, or have it done professionally. Maybe trim a bit too. Don't be excessive with it, the bottom line is just being neat.
It isn't 'a must' though, ask your bf what he likes.

The hairs sometimes get in the way, tickling the nose. I don't like hair on myself so I shave. Generally, keeps the smells. Hairy could equal smelly. Shave or trim!
