Hi Angela...kittens can begin having their nails trimmed as soon as they are weaned from the queen/mother cat. This helps them become accustomed to having their paws touched and easier to manage throughout their lifetime as well.
Here's an instructional video on how to trim kitty's nails by Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine of Feline Health: http://www.felinevideos.vet.cornell.edu/trimming_claws/

Kittens have such pointy little daggers to dig into you and other things. Probably because that has some survival value for them in the wild.
Kittens are very wiggly and won't stay still for a lot of clipping so you do it when they are feeling sleepy or snuggly. Don't do it with INTENTION. Just get one or two at a time and repeat the procedure till you get all ten done. Also when they are with you in a serene state massage their paws a little without any clippers. That way they get used to having their paws handled and it a pleasant experience for them.
I have done this with all my cats when they are young and they never give me a hard time about nail clipping as adults.

I've started at 6 weeks of age. The earlier you start the easier it will be as they grow older. Keep a scratching post handy. If you don't want to declaw teach them to use the post.Hopefuly they won't use the furniture.

We clip our cats claws too and we've clipped them as early as four/five weeks old. They don't like it much when they're that young but the earlier you start it, the sooner they get used to it. Our four year old feline just lays there and stretches his paws out for us to clip his nails; he thinks he's being pampered!

I'd say as young as 8 weeks....but they grow fast so you're better off getting SoftPaws until they can learn to control their claws.
