Hello! This may sound weird...but I am totally out of cat food. It is Sunday night, my husband went into the hospital tonight, and my son is on bedrest....and of course, my three cats want to know where their dinner is. I am hoping to make something for them to eat until I can get to the store in the morning. It has been a long day....otherwise they would have food. My concern is that I have a male kitty who can only eat low PH food. (Another reason I can't just go anywhere to buy cat food) I am out of canned tuna & canned chicken. Any easy ideas? Would they eat rice? My cats are in no way underweight (they have PLENTY of "reserves"!) but I can tell they are getting curious about supper. Thank you in advance!

Hi there...consider boiling some chicken and rice. Be sure to leave out the chicken bones. There are many human foods which can contain ingredients which could be toxic to cats. Here's a list of some of these ingredients: http://www.peteducation.com:80/article.cfm?cls=0&cat=1276&articleid=1029

Perhaps you may not be aware that Tuna is high pH and in general should be avoided as Tuna for cats is also toxic, which any vet can confirm: http://www.lenhumanesoc.org/Tips/ASPCA-Tuna.htm

Tuna can be fatal to cats and is not something to be fed to them... The human variety of tuna fish contains an enzyme that destroys vitamin B1 (thiamine). Cats who regularly eat tuna can develop a vitamin B1 deficiency, which results in neurological symptoms like dilated eyes, loss of equilibrium, seizures and death if this vitamin is not replaced. The scientific name of this disease is polioencephlomalacia.

Clearwater veterinarian Richard Brancato said that though most
domestic cats do enjoy fish, feeding them a diet of only tuna can cause serious disorders.

Although it is high in protein, tuna lacks sufficient amounts of
certain amino acids, mainly taurine, to maintain feline health. There is insufficient calcium to balance the phosphorus; the ratio in canned tuna is 1-to-14.8. This results in bone disease.

Many essential vitamins such as A and most B vitamins are also lacking, Brancato said. A common disease in cats fed a mainstay of canned tuna is steatitis, or yellow fat disease, an inflammation of the fat tissue in the body due to a deficiency of vitamin E.

Sorry, it seems you have really had a troubling day. Some cooked chicken (no bones) and rice would be a good meal or cooked ground meat. They may not want it though if they are used to commercial cat food. It will not hurt them to fast until tomorrow though they will not understand why they are not fed. Don't you get stressed about it, you have enough on your plate right now and they will not suffer.

Well, you could make up some rice and add strips of white chicken to it, that'd be a perfectly healthy substitute for one night but... It sounds to me like you have fat kitties, which I do as well and it's been my experience they can do just fine going one night without food. It won't do any damage to their system, they won't starve and believe it or not, they will forgive you when you give them their next meal! If you really want to feed them, though, I'd recommend some white rice and bits of chicken (off the bone, obviously). It's very similar to what's already in their food.

best thing would be degreased cooked hamburger meat mixed with some rice, and add a little broth to it, that usually works, and if they miss one meal, they probably wont starve, they may even go look for a mouse or two.
