Hello! My daughter is doing a class project on the Downy Woodpecker and needs to put in the phonetic spelling of the scientific name so her classmates will be able to pronounce it. Could anyone who knows, please help? Also, pronunciations that are described phonetically would be more helpful than the dictionary-type pronunciation guide that directly follows the word. Thanks so much!! I'm not really sure which section to put this in, so I'm going to choose Science and Language and perhaps homework. Sorry if it seems over-posted, we are desperate and she only has another half hour!

Thank you all! -- You're right, I forgot to put in the Latin name--the name you've posted is the same as my daughter had from her research. I really appreciate all of your efforts and I would like to be able to give you each the 10 point when the time comes!

Yes, Latin can be spoken. Jesuits used to have to speak it when they were novices. There are quite a lot of conferences in Italy every year at which only Latin is spoken. I believe schoolboys at Winchester school have to speak it. In England although it's not much spoken we do try to pronounce it in many ways in a way which is similar to the way the Romans spoke it. Any elementary book will give you guidance on how to pronounce it, but the way Latin is pronounced varies a lot within a country and even more in different countries. Unfortunately each nation tends to speak it differently, so it is often quite fifficult for people in one country to understand Latin spoken in a different country, even if they understand Latin well. There certainly is no authoritative guide on how to pronounce it that is accepted in a lot of different countries.
