The shiites and the sunnis hate each other and we are in the middle. what say we back out to kuwait and have some rest while they duke it out and then when both are weak, we go back in and take over and do what we started out to do?

This plan is already in process.
Islam has these 2 sect for 1400 years, and there have never been any problem. In fact, Shea & Sunna in Iraq in particular get along very smoothly and it's normal to see family members of both sect in the same family.

Question: What's new in Iraq that fired up the fight?

Sounds like a great idea, BUT, I'm afraid it sounds too easy. Just like in the land of Israel; there will never be peace in those regions. There are too many religious conflicts. Whether we stay or go, nothing is really going to change that much.

If it were only the fighters in Iraq, I would be all for your plan. Unfortunately, there are totally innocent civilians in the center of things. We cannot just run out on them now that we've started this. We must leave correctly.

They have been doing that for thousands of years what makes you think it would end anytime soon. They hate each other almost as bad as they hate us,the infidels.
