Any parents are hard to buy for...best solution, find a gift certificate to their favorite restaurant. Spend $50 on the gift certificate that way they can spend it together and you've bought them a real nice night out together.

why the need to spend a specified amount ($50?). If they like you, they should understand your financial situation. I think they would be happy with a tin of freshly baked cookies or a box of chocolate. Think back to what you got 3 years ago. Most likely youll remember something that you receive that was rather personal not expensive at all. Anything else you ll be scratching your head trying to remember. I would go that route.

Make a basket of small items that you know they'll use. Such as bath products for both, some small tools for the father, some kitchen gadgets for his mom. You dont need to spend much on these items. Dollar stores have a lot of these things for a dollar or 2. Check out Walmart for gift baskets or gift boxes that are already put together with the bath items, take them out of their basket/box and arrange them into your basket. Hope this helps!!

ask your bf to look around and find a photo of his parents from a really happy christmas in their past
take it to a studio and get it transferred into a charcoal drawing, etc..
frame it up
voila!
a gift that shows you'd like to be a part of the family
--even if it's as a good friend (of the family)

the photo can be doctored on-line
and enlarged off...
