motorcitymadman is correct. Prokofiev composed the score for Sergei Eisenstein's movie Alexander Nevsky, which was a purely Communist movie, extolling the courage and patriotism of the Worker Class.

The movie, Alexander Nevsky, had German medieval knights on a Crusade, converting the Russians by force. Naturally, the Russians win.

When he lived in France he became involved in Christian Science. Here is a comment from a messageboard debate (read the whole page for more details):

First "contact" Prokofiev - Christian Science was in 1924, Paris. And first was Lina, who visited Christian Scienca practitioner. Prokofiev himself is interested on self-control possibility given by Christian Science ideas, no more. You can read all about in Serge Prokofiev Diary 1907-1933 in Russian.

I couldn't find any website that definitively answered this question. But I did find him associated with many Jewish webpages. He apparently composed many Jewish works. This does not necessarily mean he was Jewish, he might have just liked that style or something.

Here he is mentioned amidst composers of Jewish music:

Sorry I wasn't able to find anything more certain.

He was apparently christened in a Russian Orthodox Church in his home town of Sontsovka. (see link below)

His later embrace of atheistic Soviet Communism, however, suggests that any religion he held to was fairly superficial.
