What is the level of difficulty - (HARD)

If you can afford to - have it cover with 1/4 or 3/8 drywall and finished / with scrapping off the old popcorn you will need to do drywall repairs anyways because of the nicks and dents you create that you may as well save yourself alot of time ,energy, and frustration

Nasty job! Messy. You will need to scrape all of the popcorn off. Once that is done then the real work. You will need to allpy a THIN coat of drywall compound.Let it dry, sand smooth. Then apply another thin coat of compound, and repeat. Do this until you are satisfied with the look. Now you need to prime the ceiling and then paint. Good Luck

I had to do this once in my own home. To make a long story short, a small fire caused the ceiling to be black.
If yours is crumbly to the touch like mine was, then you can scrape it off with a 12" drywall blade. A lot of work and mess as well.
If yours is hard & rough, then it has been spray painted and forget removing it. Just re-paint.

Like everybody is telling you it's messy hard work. You can scrap just enough then put another layer of drywall over it.................or.......if there isn't blown in insulation above it take out the popcorn ceiling and replace the drywall......I would rather rip it out then try to scrape and salvage the drywall underneath.

Good luck....
