Well, the same thing that accounts for a bully growing up to be a doctor I expect.

Peace!

later:
I am not trying to be flip about your question. You are right - so much of humanity's religions have traditions of hate and violence and yet they do strive to (and manage to) correct and shift and lumber through history, some a patchwork jumble of culture after culture they have tried to appease and include (kind of like the Borg, lol).

What I am trying to say is that as we evolve as a people, a culture and religiously there are going to be changes and course corrections if the community is to survive. There will be mistakes made along the way and there will hopefully be people trying to learn from our mistakes and trying to avoid them in the future. That is really all any human can do.

Peace!

To believe that cruelty has a place in ushering in peace is insane.
If cruelty is part of a religions core belief structure, then it's wrong to begin with, and leaves no room for it to practice anything different.

Good question because people do not change.
The church leaders were cruel then, and they will be when the time comes.

Let's go back to Jesus' time,
Jesus hated the Pharisees and the Sadducee's double hearted ways.

He said to judge a tree by it's produce. He was linking that example to false leaders.
He said to identify his followers by the love they had between themselves.
Find the only true religion that exercises that, and you have found life.

interesting question. I would have to say what ever cruelty their is in my religion it has only been a means to and end.

meaning that violence was not necessary or desired but an unfortunate reality that existed 3,000 years ago.

fortunately that is no longer the case.

God makes it a religion of peace. Man made the cruelty son.
