I am running windows me.
When I try to access the control panel through start-settings, I receive the error;" Explorer has caused an error in shell32.dll" If I try to access the control panel through the "my computer" icon, I receive the message, " Explorer has caused an error in schell32.dll". I have run registry repair and repaired 106 entries. and my virus scan comes up clean, What might be causing this, and what should I do? Also, I cannot right click the start button to explore.

Yeah, ME is crappy software, but that's what you have. What you also have is a particular trojan. Don't do any more registry repairs. There are a few antivirus programs that find and eliminate this, you may have to try several before you find the right one. I don't know what you have for AV, but uninstall it and get the current AVG from Grisoft. There will be a new version out in January 2007, and you can download that one later, but for now, get AVG and run it.

You might also do a Google search for shell32.dll virus and see what you find. There are lots of references to it, and lots of offers of "free removal." Just go with AVG, and if that doesn't work, uninstall it, and download Avast!. One or the other should find and remove this from your computer. Good luck!

I suggest that you try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no errors. The problem is likely to be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at

I would advise that you first close as much running processes as you can in the task bar. What did you install recently? When did this started happening?

Do you have to many things open when you try to open the control panel?

Do you get the same message in safe mode?

In my opinion, Windows ME is absolutely the most worthless OS that I can think of. Have you tried updating Windows ME using windows update? There might be fixes to this.

Windows ME is not an operating system it's a bug.
