Hi,
I had a kidney cat for 5 years. Twenty-Five pounds of litter a week for just the one cat. He was my angel and i went to some great lengths to keep him with us. First and foremost NEVER EVER let your kitty's waterbowl become empty!! My Runt drank upwards of a gallon a day. And if you question the purity of your tap water even a little bit, Kitty Gets Bottled Water!!! Those two things I learned with some very close brushes with,,, you know.
If your kitty has urinary tract issues, more than likely that is only a symptom to kidney problems. If money is somewhat of an issue when it comes to food, Purina One Special Care is easy to find and pretty reasonable compared to what it will cost to buy from your vet. My Mom always told me that a high ash content in 95% of cat food on the shelves can be blamed for so many kitties having CRF. And lastly, if you even sense a stressful situation near kitty, run, run, run away"giggle" bein a little dramatic there. But avoiding stressful situations is as important to his health as water is to his kidneys. I hope this helped. My Runt has been gone for 12 years and not a day goes by that I dont miss him. Good luck and take care.

My kittie had the same problem, the key to good health for kittie is to get a dry food that is low in magnesium it is sometimes called ash,
Make sure he has fresh water clean litterbox so he can void as frequently as he needs.
Try to stay away from special foods that contain ground corn, It is just used as a filler and does nothing for kitties health, hills science diet happens to be one and is pushed by vets but it is highly overrated, Natural choice complete care is what I feed my cat he loves it and have had no additional problems with UTI's.
The price is a little high but well worth the investment, Better then kitty getting sick again and having those high vet bills.

My little tink tink has had surgery a couple of years ago because he had bladder stones. He has been on a special diet since. There was a time I couldn't afford the Vet prescription food and started him back on his regular food. Big mistake. He got stones again but was caught in time. They were small and he passed them. Do as the Vet says. Mine also told me to give him Distilled water. Since he is on the diet they all are. It is more common in boys. If they continue to reaccure then he may have to have his male parts removed. (easier to pass stones) You don't want a stone to get caught in the urethra, because it could back up his urine, enlarge his bladder and put out poison in his system. It was too late for one of our cats when we noticed he had a problem. (he was indoor/outdoor) We thought he was doing his business outdoors. Tink tink basically told us he was having a problem by tickling where ever he had the urge (and that wasn't like him, he has always used the litter box) and it wasn't much and sometimes had blood in it. He is also indoor/outdoor. I also buy the Urinary Tract food made by Purina along with the canned at the Vets. The distilled water doesn't have the impurities in it like the tap water may, depending on where you live. He is as fiesty as ever and still Big King Daddy (our nickname for him) Tink tink is going on 13 years I believe. Good luck to you and keep with the Vet visits. The surgery isn't cheap. The food is cheaper in the long run.

They put methionine in the special prescription food to acidify the urine and keep the crystals from forming. I don't know if your vet has him on that or not. Certainly continue it until the crisis is resolved.

My cat had his problems when I was just starting a raw meat diet for all my cats. He never had the precription food and of course the raw meat keeps the urine at the proper pH and he never had any further troubles. I would definitely cut out any dry food when the prescription food has done its work. Dehydration from dry food concentrates the urine too much and may have caused his problem in the first place.

I have had two cats with a similar problem. My best advice is to stick with the special diet that your vet recommended, it is the best way to keep the problem from happening again. Good Luck.

One of my cats used to spend the summer in the greenhouse and also got a UTI then. It was because she was dehydrated so I can understand that maybe dry food wouldn't be the best. Our cat got canned food anyway. But water is the important thing.

I've read that it's good for them to drink plenty of water. Since you can't force a cat to drink, I feed my two cats wet food in the evening to get more water in their diet. They still have dry food in the morning. I also give them the water from cans of tuna fish now and then. I've also heard about flavored water for pets, that makes them want to drink more. You might check at pet supply stores.

Best advice I can give is...Ask you Vet. I was told that dry food is not good for their urinary tract and to feed them canned cat food. I believe that if the cat food first few ingredient is corn...something. It is really bad for their urine tract. But again I would ask the Vet. in your area.
