[7]At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it;
[8] If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.
[9] And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it;
[10] If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.

What happened in Egypt?

This Nation of people had a Promised Land for their future ans here Egypt had them enslaved. It was time for them to go. Moses and Aaron was the 4th generation fromGen.15:13,16 and 430 years away from the covenant and 400 years away from Isaac being old enough to be Heir.
Jacob in Canaan, had come to Egypt 215 years after the covenant, Gen.47:9,11,28; The 70 members of his family had been placed in Rameses Egypt when he was age 130, he died at age 147; Now Exo.6:16-23,26[ 4th gen ]; 7:7[ Moses age 80 ]; 12:40,41 [ 430 years has passed from the covenant and 215 years for the family in Egypt ], they were half a million and Moses was to take these heirs to the Promised Land after 40 years of passing through the same land pirates that had been since the flood 857 years ago, Abraham's was very rich Gen.13:2; and gave all he had to Isaac, so his family from 400 years ago, was pilgrims on strange, or strangers land the whole time.
In 40 years after the death of Moses age 80 to 120 Deut.34:7 they passed through to the Promised Land by people that did not sell them a drink of water and God had to feed them with manna from heaven Josh.5:6,10,12; to 897 years after the flood.

Now in the days of Jeremiah, [ Assyria had claimed Israel with Samaria, in the days of Isaiah ], now Judah with Jerusalem, the Promised Land is desolate 1804 after the flood.

We don't necessarily need to know whether our efforts will bear fruit. Jonah preached to Nineveh, and the people repented, but a generation later God destroyed them for their sin. It may be that God wanted to save some of them in that generation, but later had to protect the rest of the nations from being contaminated with evil practices.

Why work so hard to witness and to help improve people's lives in a land where they may be doomed after all...? because we are called to be faithful, not successful. We do what is compassionate and God provides whether our efforts are successful or not-- that is, whether they have any lasting effect at all, beyond this life.

no... at the time when Jeremiah spoke this it was only for Israel. But, because of Christ, we all can stake claim to this. So everyone on earth is our countrymen. And we should hurt when they hurt. This was Jesus intent for giving the parable of the good Samaritan. : )
