Don't use artex, why do you think in all the makeover programmes, the first thing they do is get rid of the Artex. No you can't artex over lining paper. If the walls are uneven, get a professional plasterer to come in and skim them. Alternatively dot and dab the walls and apply sheets of new plaster board. Much easier and much better finish.

A few years ago I had two bedroom ceilings artexed, for the same reason you want to do it.They were finished in a sort of spiral pattern and give an `embossed `look to the ceilings. They look great, but I have been told that should I ever want to `get rid` of the artex, it is a major job to remove it. It is also quite hard to clean as the dust collects in the `spirals` and has to be brushed with a soft brush, it is also not easy to paint over the `spirals`. If you are artexing walls I would advise you to have a smooth finish. I suppose if you can do plastering, you would be able to do artexing. Good Luck.

If you have a popcorn ceiling, you need to scrap it off. It is better to just fix it and very carefully paint over it. I sprayed mine the first time but have since learned that you roll one way quickly and let it dry thoroughly. Do not go back and forth. When dry pain in the opposite direction quickly and let it dry thoroughly. Now let dry over night. Paint from the first direction again and then the second direction, drying in between. Once you get a good coat on then you can paint just a little less cautiously. There are patches for popcorn and the best one is popcorn stuff in a carton. You can mix it with paint and dab it on where needed and then the painting starts again. If you are trying to put joint compound over drywall to make it easy. . .just do small coats and apply in wider swaths each time. A woman's secret to joint compound is that is smooths easily with a kitchen sponge after it is fairly dry. Sand between coats to smooth as much as possible. It is difficult to get it perfect without a lot of practice but just keep working at it. Prime with sealer when you are done. If you notice spots that need more work, just add more and sand until you get it right and seal it again. I use BIN for sealer and the one that cleans with water. I hope this is helpful because I don't know the products you mention. My very first fix it book offered this suggestion. . .Go to the hardware store and ask advice. If you mess it up, go to a different store for more advice or products. That way you can always say. . .as the men think you can't do it. . .that the project came out just fine. You will be taken more seriously the second time you ask how to do something.

start with p.v.a.ing the walls as this controlls the suction. mix with hot water to a thick consistency then water down with cold to required thickness. the heavier the mix the thicker it will be on the wall.when applying lay it on with a soft bristled sweeping brush and cover about 2 metres square at a time then fall back and do your design.brush in any internal corners with a 1 inch paint brush and clean your skirtings wit hot water and sponge when job is done.always dip the design tool in the artex before putting it on the wall cause if u dont it will just take it off. remember dilute p.v.a. 3:1 with water and you cant do it over lining paper

Yes it is easy, no don't put it on lining paper.
Use WARM water when you mix it.
If you want a flat finish, use a float to apply the artex.
