I'm so glad you don't want to use a straightener every day--I have a hard time getting my hair to curl now after using one every day.
Use a LOT of conditioner. It weighs down your hair and thereby straightens it a bit (not 100%, but it helps). Don't rinse it out completely--make sure there is still a bit left in your hair. (My hairstylist actually said this is a good rule of thumb for everyone.) Also, conditioner is fantastic for your hair of course!

Hair that is straightened using a flat iron, doesn't need to be straightened on a daily basis. I can go from shampoo to shampoo without straightening, 2 maybe even 3 days if I really am lazy. If you have hair that reacts to humidity you'll have the frizzies (curls) then but otherwise no. Provided you buy a top quality Professional if possible, flat iron, don't straighten when your hair is wet/damp, use a good quality made specifically for...conditioner that is meant for use with irons and you condition your hair well after every shampoo using a good quality shampoo and conditioner for this...you shouldn't have a problem.
I know of several people, my daughter and myself included, who have straighted our hair for at least the past 5 years with flat irons...our hair is actually in much better condition than people who have done nothing to their hair, including never dyed, streaked or highlighted.
It's all in how you manage it and the quality of the products and tools you use. Good luck

There's a new straightener built with clay and it's supposed to protect hair more. The best part of it is that it straightens in one swipe when done right, or if not then 2-3 swipes. This works so well because the clay part protects it from burning and there are many grooves within the plate that seperate each strand, rather than a clump of hair being "smashed"--it's at a kiosk in your mall, they do a test strip for free and its like 80 bucks. You can get a reg. straightener but i suggest buying vo5 hair conditioning creme and get the original and only use a little tiny bit, cause if too much is applied, its gonna ruin your 'do until you rewash. (its that good!!!!)

I agree with the statement about Conair products not being the greatest, but you don't need to go to a salon to have great hair. Revlon makes great products (go ceramic).
As far as damage control - put some form of a product in your hair to protect it. I use a hair serum (Garnier) before I straighten so that my hair doesn't get damaged. Also, because I have dry hair, I try not to wash it every day. Therefore, I don't straighten it everyday. Plus, washing your hair every day robs it of some of the moisture it absorbs from your scalp.
Also: use a clarifying shampoo once a week. That'll get rid of any buildup.

i am DEFF the person to ask this question to. i've been using a straightener since 7th grade(i am now in 11th). the main thing u MUST know is that "Con-air" hairstyle products ARE CHEAP! ones that are sold in target or any of those type os stores will not only damage your hair badly, but don't work well after about 2 months. go to "Bubbles" or any other type of hair salon and they sell proffesional straighteners there. they have what is called "ceramic plates" of the straightener to stop the damage of burned ur hair and leaving hardly any split ends. take my word on this!! my straightener is about 2 years old and i use it everyday. it works!

Straightening is not great for your hair and ideally you should only do it occasionally. If you need to do it every day, use a good protective spray designed for straightening. There are lots on the market, I like Mark Hill or Charles Worthington if you can get them but it's often trial and error to find the one that suits you best but they are designed to create a barrier betweeen your hair and the iron to minimise damage.

A straightener does dry up your hair. However there are many products to spray on your hair b4 straightening it to help not to damage it. You could always go for chemically straightening it at your salon. This always helps if you have curly hair.

if you use good products (I like bedhead stuff) before you straighten/blow dry and have a quality straightener like a ceramic one (Chi's are GREAT) you should be okay. you dont have to wash your hair every time you shower. or you can get it professionally relaxed/straightened.
