Because your so tired when your on your way home. And California is 3 hours difference from New York so it SEEMS like it takes forever but it don't. It takes the same amount of time your just going through all those different time zones and it screws with your body. Thats why you sleep for like three days when you get home, because your brain and body are readjusting.

It has to do with the jet stream. Going east to west you have a head wind, which slows down the plane, going west to east you usually get a tail wind and speeds up the flight.

because there is a prevailing high speed wind up there called the jet stream............we didnt find out about it till commercial jets started flying in the 50's, hence the name......it blows more or less from the west to the east making CA>NY 'downhill"

Going East and West you have Head and Tail winds which will work with you or against you. Going East the wind is working with you, while west you are working against the wind.
