The short answer is that the Ten Commandments are not the basis for laws in out country. Of the ten, only 2 have corresponding laws making them illegal. You might give half-credit to lying, since it is illegal to lie under oath, but is not generally illegal.

Three of them (No other gods, graven images and keeping the sabbath) would fall under the 1st Amendment and are specifically not legislatable.

The rest are certainly good ideas, but are not part of our legal system. In fact, you can make a pretty good case for coveting your neighbor's goods being the basis for our capitalistic economy.

It's a misconception. Think about it, some of the 10 commandments are meant to preserve the lives of those who believe in them. The rest do nothing to protect anyone. Most of the 10 commandments are just ways people should live together in a group, and were uttered by those who lived thousands if not tens of thousands of years before the bible was even thought about. People know how they should interact with one another, those that say it comes from a higher power, as if we are such an inadequate, flawed and poorly designed creature are just trying to reinforce their own religious beliefs, at the expense of their own creators power, not having the ability of being able to make a more adequate and self sufficient sentient and intelligent creation.

i don't think the ten commandments are the basis for this country, however many of the laws on the books were based off of the bible and the ten commandments, and some of those things you mentioned most likely are on the books but not being enforced cuz 75 % of this sinful country would be locked up including the ones making and enforcing the laws.

I assume America is your country when I say the following:

Because contrary to right-wing belief, Christianity isn't the one true religion. America is a haven for all religions, where everybody can be free and safe without fear of persecution. There are some people who say "Christianity was the basis for our country, it should be the official religion of our country, and all the other religions are wrong anyway" (which is not true), but that would undermine the first amendment and what our country stands for. So if people want to do all those things, whether they are good or not matters not. They are not restrained by a single religion. Long live America!

As others have stated the ten commandments were one of the basis's for our laws, not necessarily our country. Most of them were laws at one time in our country, and some of them still are in some forms. Adultery, murder, theft, public profanity, and so on. Try buying liquor in most states on Sunday morning when you should be in church!

The Ten Commandments are NOT the basis of our country, and thank God. For if they were, I would not be allowed to practice my religion.

The Ten Commandments aren't the basis of America.

The Ten Commandments are all morals. People in general don't like being killed, stolen from, et cetera, so it's what you put in to law.

The founding fathers were Deists, not Christians. They based the country on the moral teachings of the Bible, but they didn't believe in the miracles, such as creation and the virgin birth. They were consider enlightened men of their time.
