Sorry to be asking such a dumb question, but what is a word for something that causes cancer?! Thanks for the help!

They way my one nursing professor explained it - we are all born with cancer cells. Carcinogins (usually something toxic or un-natural) from the outside will cause those cancer cells to mutate and become destructive cancerous cells.

For instance - a diet high in saturated fat - over time, all the saturated fat will mutate some of your cells into cancerous cells thus causing intestinal cancer or colon cancer.

OR the other big one - after smoking for awhile - the toxins will cause your normal cells to mutate thus causing esophageal or lung cancer.

That's as simple as i can put it - hope that helps.

carcinogenic...refers to anything that can cause cancer... food, chemicals...etc
