Ha! I just turned 37 and had a gift certificate for a tattoo parlor that I had won. I never had a tattoo before and wasn't planning on getting one either. I was just going to use the certificate to buy some t-shirts.
Then I was driving home, 3 days after my 37th birthday, and told my girlfriend that I was going to go to the tattoo place to see what they had.
She said, "Why don't you just get a tattoo?". I spontaneously said, "Yea, I think I will!".
So, a smiley face is sort of my trademark so I decided to get one. I went to the tattoo place and they had NOTHING that I liked as far as a smiley face, so the tattoo artist drew one for me. I looked at his cute smiley face and said, "Well I'm kind of a sassy girl so I think he needs his tongue sticking out. He altered it and I LOVED it.
SO, then I had to decide where to get it. I didn't want it on my butt, back or shoulder as I wanted to be able to see it. I didn't want to get it on my ankle because I wanted to hide it when I dressed up. So....I decided to get it on my right boob.
I was VERY nervous. He started to do the tattoo and it was very funny. I thought it was going to hurt but it hardly hurt at ALL!!! I have been told that it doesn't hurt as much on "fatty" areas as it does on more boney areas though! The only time that it hurt a little was when he went over an area that he did already (the outline of the smiley face).
I am very happy with my tattoo and was surprised that it was didn't hurt as much as I thought it would. I think my neck hurt more from keeping it bent to see what he was doing!!!
Go ahead do it!

Honestly, it depends on where you get the tattoo. The closer to the bone the more it will hurt. Like your elbow, foot or hand, where there isnt much flesh around the bone and there are more nerve endings. If I could describe the feeling, would compare it to a scratch feeling. Get a safety pin or a sewing needle and scratch it on your skin. It feels like a constant sensation. Just remember, the more flesh the less pain. This is your first one, get something small, maybe something you can add on to. If the feeling doesnt bother you, get more. :)
Good Luck
P.S. Make sure your artist has A LOT of experience and the parlor is clean. You get what you pay for in the tattoo world, you don't want to come down with something or get a messed up tattoo that you now have to get fixed. I've seen it. And it is permanent.

Yes, tattoo's hurt... It's just part of the experience. When you are done you have it for the rest of your life, so it's worth it. Oh, and in case you are afraid of the pain... Remember, you are paying this person to tattoo you. So you can tell them you need a break! Every tattoo artist I know, listens really well. Point blank, the artist would rather take a break then have you be in serious pain. Good luck! It isn't that bad!

Yes/no. I am 19 and have 3. tattoos. I have one on my tailbone. That was painful. But i had a lot of color done in a big area. It hurt so bad that i couldnt sit for a few days. But the pain depends and varys on a lot. how big of a person you are. where you are getting it done at on your body. how much color you are getting done, and so on but just keep in mind it hurts the most of any bone no matter what. Also make sure you use the correct medication for it. some creams can ruin your coloring.

I've never had a tattoo either but I'm guessing that pricking skin repeatedly with a needle is going to hurt. I've been told that it depends on where the tattoo is being placed, on a fleshy part of the body or close to bone. But overall I think it has more to do with your tolerance for pain.

Depends on your tolerance to pain and where the tattoo is going to be located. Some areas of the body are more tender and sensitive to pain. I have one on my right middle finger and one on my upper right arm. To me, they both felt like little pin pricks over and over......and after a few minutes, I couldn't really feel it too much at all. But then again I have a high tolerance to pain. Before you go to get the tattoo, I would go to the place you are planning on getting it at and watch them give a couple and talk to the person who is doing it. Make sure that they use a sterile technique. Make sure that all the needles and such come out of unopened sterile packages. Good luck!!

Depends on where you get it and it also depends on the person. I have one on my middle/upper back that didn't hurt, one on my middle/lower back that nearly killed me, and one on my hip that didn't hurt at all. I think the more that it hits the bone the more it hurts. Cool that you are getting one for your 38th! What are you planning on getting? You know yet?

You should definitely get one!! Here's my experience with tattoos:
When I got my first one, it hurt a little. But it was nothing like I had expected! When you're done, and for the next few weeks, you're going to feel empowered. That's why they're so addicting! Tats are GREAT!!

It depends on your pain tolerance and where you get it. I have a high pain tolerance and I got a tattoo on my ankle and the only place it kind of hurt was right over the bone and it kind of burned back by the calf muscle.

i think it not only depends on the person getting the tattoo, but the artist, the type of tattoo, and the area on which it is being placed. i thought that it just became a dull burn and the noise was more annoying than anything!
