You can also lose one pound a week

The majority of fitness professionals advise slow weight loss as the safest and most helpful approach. A sensible weight-loss program allows you to lose weight slowly -- about one-half to one pound per week. Slow weight loss promotes long-term loss of body fat, not just water weight that can be rapidly regained.

Most people need around 15 calories per pound to maintain their weight. A person of 150 pound would not eat food that contains calories more than 2250 per day in order to maintain his/her weight.

In order to burn one pound, a person need to burn 3500 calories more than they are used. For example, dropping calories by 300 per day and increasing daily movement to burn off an extra 200 calories should result in a weight loss of one pound a week.

Whatever works for you. Make your goals realistic. Weight Watchers recommends 1 to 2 pounds per week, but of course this can vary from person to person. If you are eating a well balanced diet and not taking in less than 1200 calories a day, I wouldn't worry about depriving yourself of vital nutrients. You can always take a multi-vitamin. Good luck with the weight loss and make sure you're exercising too!

PS Don't get discouraged if all you lose is a quarter of a pound...think of it as a stick of butter (each stick equals a quarter pound).

You have it right. The best way is to not weigh but once a month and then at the same time of day and on the same scale. The key is to eat a variety of good food and just make the portions smaller and replace all drinks with water and enjoy a soft drink or whatever on occasion. Then move more. Whatever does it for you. Dancing is good. Start out slow, stretch always first then oump up the music and beat and go for it. Also, walking and doing any kind of moving that you don't do now. Just pick the one you like best and start slow and work up to the point that you can do it for 20 min. 3-4 times a week. Eat small healthy snacks between meals so you aren't tempted by deprivation to eat a fast food value meal. That does all the exercise in for the week. Unless it's water and baked chips and remove the white bread. So, just be careful what you eat and make sure you get enough protein, good fats and veggies. Fruits are good to snack on and nuts also in moderation. Good luck.

First things first, quit listening to Doctor's and start listening to your own body. Stop thinking weight loss & calories and start thinking more water, minerals & vitamins that our bodies use as the main building blocks of proper growth and maintenance. Look at 2 main sources of proper health: blood flow and toxins...increase your blood flow and remove the toxins! Easiest place to start is by stopping ALL fast food and anything packaged in CARDBOARD. By just changing a few, simple habits along the way you'll see gradual results and by continuing to increase your water consumption and by that I mean assess EVERYTHING you drink from caffine to sugars and the like and instead replace them with NOTHING BUT WATER! I can't empasize this point more clearly than if you were going to wash a big load of completely muddy, soiled clothes and then only add 2 cups of water...How clean do you think your clothes would get? Exactly, logic begins to prevail...society as a whole substitutes way too much negative choices into their living habits instead good 'ol H20. After that, EDUCATE, EDCUATE & MORE EDUCATION on how your body begins to react to these 2 simple steps---you will be amazed at the results in just over a month and your positive energy level will increase a 100 fold...only then will you begin to understand proper weight management and you are then able to throw out something that should never have been invented---THE WEIGH SCALE!

Good luck,

BS from Canada

The physician recommends that you lose no more than 1% of your body weight each week. Usually that's between 1 and 2 lbs. a week. 1 lb. is certainly healthy and would be just fine as a goal.
