I've read bible commentaries but for the most part like to stay directly in the Word and let the holy spirit teach me. The commentaries can be enlightening and are helpful especially to new believers but you always have to remember that they are written by men and can be influenced by the writer's biases to a certain extent.

The Imitation of Christ - Thomas á Kempis (Precious Blood edition has fantastic artwork)
Introduction to the Devout Life - Francis de Sales

I read them cover to cover and I meditate upon them, and I read them on the subway, and I rejoice and I repeat holy poems that I've memorized in those books.

Yeah, baby; and I'm a saint and I'm holy.
