Assuming you are comparing the .7mm Remington Magnum to the .300 Winchester Magnum, the .300 is more powerful, period. The .7mm Remington Ultra Magnum is more 'powerful' (faster, harder hitting) than the .300 Winchester Magnum, but not more so than the .300 Weatherby Magnum. Broadly speaking the bigger the caliber the more powerful the round. Conversely, when speaking of shotgun calibers the smaller the gauge the bigger the bore, the more powerful the shotgun. Example: A .12 gauge is bigger than a .20 gauge; a .10 gauge is bigger than a .12 gauge and so on.

Ballistically the .7mm Remington compares best to the old .30-06 Springfield. The .30-06 shoots a 7.62mm diameter bullet and the .7mm shoots a .28 diameter bullet.

The .30-06 offers more bullet weight variation than the .7mm Mag. Both are big calibers for Elk/Moose size game. Even Grizzly bear have been taken with these two rounds. The person who said the .7mm Mag. was a varmint round must have been kidding. Although old-timers accustomed to hunting with big-bore rifles (.45-70 & up), did consider the thirty and smaller bore 'varmint rounds.'

Even though varmints can be taken with most any caliber and I have hunted with a .458 Winchester Mag, I don't consider the .7mm Mag. a varmint rifle.

Bound's hubby here:

Looking at the downrange energy of both catridges (at 500 yards), the .300 Winchester Magnum clearly has more energy than the 7mm Remington Magnum. This is seen by looking at comparable weight bullets (7mm = 175 gr and .300 = 180 gr) and the heaviest bullets offered for both calibers by Remington (7mm = 175 gr and .300 = 200 grain). This is supported by the following link.

Good luck!

the 7 Mag is a varmint rifle, smaller slug than a 300, the 300 packs more punch. As a side note, the single most accurate rifle I ever fired was a 7 Mag.

that depends on your definition of powerful, the 300 is a heaver bullet and hits harder but the 7 mm has a flatter further trajectory. Grain is also a consideration.

if you mean pure punch, then the 300 win mag wins hands down due to it's heavier bullets. but if ya mean accuracythen both are equally equipped to do the job.
