i really really like this guy.. for like 3 years now. and at some point, i'm pretty sure he liked me too. we started out as friends, talking at parties and such... but a few years have gone by now and i only see him in the halls because we aren't in any classes together. he'll focus on me in the crowd, and is extra quiet around me. and if we ever talk, he'll look at my lips. (my friends tell me all this- before they even knew i liked him) he's really shy, and according to my friends, treats me differently. he's had gf's, but he's single now... anyway, i was wondering how i could get him to loosen up and notice me WITHOUT asking him out right away. (that would be awkward since i haven't talked to him for so long). also, do you think he likes me? i'll give lots of points to the best answer if it helps...

Sounds like he likes you to me....just try to hang out with him... Ask him to help you do something...that will get you some time with him, plus it will boost his confidence when he can help.. Not sure how old you are, but lose your keys and ask him for a ride? or ask him for help in math... something like that... just hang out with him..it will all work out...

I don't know if my answer will be any good, but it sounds like there are some good indications he likes you. You have to figure out an excuse to talk to him for some reason, but in a casual way. Try to think of something you know he likes to do and if you see him in the hall go up to him and ask how it's going, etc. and ask if he's going to the X concert or the Y game or whatever you think would make sense. Even if he says no, you can ask him what he's been up to lately. Not sure what kind of school you are in, but if you chat with him can you ask him what he's going to do after school is over? (Not sure whether you are in HS or College or what.) Once you've been chatting a while if he doesn't suggest something you could say you're going to be hanging out at ???somewhere this weekend and maybe you'll see him there. Then make sure you go there. If he likes you he will show up, even if he is shy.

Sometimes guys are shy (which just makes them cuter right?) But I see it is also confusing you about how he might feel about you. I couldn't tell how old you are by your question but I'm guessing teenage...My suggestion is coming up with a way that the two of you can be semi-alone together. I know eating lunch with anyone other than your regular group during school years is a cardinal sin. However, maybe going for a lunch date on the weekend or meeting at the park. You need to be in a setting where you can show him you like him by being open and funny which will allow him to mirror your behavior and bring him out of his shell.

If you have his number, call and invite him out for coffee. Some place where you won't run into any other friends and be interrupted. Make it small talk; if you guys have something in common, use it as a base. But if he's as shy as you say he is, you'd want to keep it causal and not scare him off. Then the next call will be for a burger, movie, etc. Before you know it, you'll be where you want to be!

He likes you. Period. Now it may be up to you to take the next step and ask him out. Some guys won't ask - they'll put the signs out and wait for you to ask, especially if they are in any way shy. Just ask him!
