Because it's the easiest and shortest way of showing agreement or understading.

It's been around for a while... and it's going to be too. But languages change all the time; this question perhaps will be irrelevant 20 years from now. Everybody will maybe then say "AJ" meaning all right. You never know. OK is Fine, just as fine as all right, it's just the trend that picks one up and drops the other ones... temporarily.

when your in an awkward momment i guess it just comes natural like what else could you say? and sometimes when people just won't shut-up ou just don't say "shutup!" if youu don't know the person you say "ok" and its over

It is an engrained part of our language as well as that of other countries also.. I do not know what we would do without it.. do you?
