She was technically forced by Barac.
She was a prophet and was sent to tell Barac how exactly God wanted him to approach the upcoming battle.
Barac was very uncomfortable with the message and told Deborah that he wouldnt go into this batte without her by his side.
She consulted God and he told her to go along with Barac, but the victory would now not ultimately be his, his enemy would actually be delivered into the hands of a woman (not Deborah)
The rest of this story is also very interesting and involves one very strong woman physically anyway.

Deborah was a prophetess and judge in Israel. Barak would not lead the Israelite Army without her. Therefore, she had to take the leadership role.

She was a very wise woman, and God blessed her. She says of herself that she became a "mother in Israel". People looked to her for direction and she became a judge over Israel. Great woman!

God chose her to judge the people of Israel. God choose who will judge by standards that are different than ours. He looks at the heart, and the willingness to serve.
