Well done so far! i have been dry for 2 yrs and a bit now, dont accept anything like that shloer garpe juice stuff or alcohol free lager if it is on offer. Just look at the people getting drunk and think about how they will feel in the morning compared to how you will! it works for me, mind you i know what you are saying, if i go to a nightclub i do find it difficult

Images of drinking will hit you from every angle!!xmas is a tough one!
Difficult to help as i dont know your personality? Avoid if possible the parties,( i got very aggressive with people trying to ply me with drink, particularly new years eve. T.V was the one i found hard!! Keep your stomach loaded with water at difficult times, helps with the craving.
I must point out that i am back on the booze, but are a better person than i was. Everyone is an individual with regard to a drink problem.
Keyword i think matey, avoid the situations, The very BEST of luck to you over xmas well done so far!!

Been there pal, the thing is to immerse yourself in something that is nothing to do with drinking, partying or anything of that ilk. I quit drink and drugs 3 years ago and its still tough. This xmas I'm off mountaineering in North Wales. Standing on a summit on Xmas day is a far better buzz than being a dribbling mess somewhere.
Live Life, go somewhere different, and experience all life has to offer and then the desire to drink will go away
Good Luck!!!

Certainly do not follow mofo's advice on drinking cider!
Just take it step by step, and I know it will not be easy, but try to avoid social situations if you feel the temptation is still there.
If you do go out, be strong to yourself and set a time limit, and stick to it.
You have achieved so much this year, and remind yourself how bad things were when you were drinking, and know that you never want to end up there again
I got through last Christmas by telling myself how well I was doing, and I didn't want to let myself down.
My family knew I'd gone to AA, and so they deliberately cut down their alcohol consumption, and didn't get drunk in front of me. Any time I felt awkward, I just had to excuse myself, and go and listen to some music, or watch a bit of TV as a distraction.
Do not assume that everyone else is having more fun than you, as that is not true. They're just getting drunk because it's Christmas, and deep down aren't really enjoying themselves, but want to be part of the mindless crowd.
I can only suggest you stay strong willed, and congratulate yourself for how far you've come this year.
You'll do it. You've come this far, so don't spoil it for yourself.
Hope you have a good one.
add - ps if you need to 'talk' to an anonymous 'other', you can e-mail me. I'll do my best to help. Chin up!

The easiest thing is just to avoid it all together. Until you are 100% recovered(as in at least a year), you should hang out with drinkers too much. There should be some people who are not drinking at the party. You can also drink sparkling cider, or a coke(noone knows theres no rum). Try and have a quick simple answer for people who ask why you are not drinkiing. Always keep in the back of your mind...its been almost a year since your last drink. If you have one now, its going to take another year to be at the same place you are now.

Book yourself a luxury package holiday to Jordan (to see Petra) or Cairo (to see the pyramids). Neither of these countries is "dry" but alcohol won't be so apparent. Simultaneously you'll be distracted by the amazing scenery and history that either place has to offer, and most importantly, you'll break the habit of a lifetime in the association of Christmas=alcohol=holiday. You need to break that association.
I feel for you. You've come a long way, you can do it over Christmas too, so - give yourself a treat, give yourself a holiday of a lifetime and make it easy on yourself to forego the booze.
Good luck. x

Not been there, but, i would make sure your mates know and dont encourage you to " just have one" its xmas crap, you have done really well to go on holiday and not drink so you should be proud of yourself, drink a few red bulls, and while everyone is falling over, you will be the life and soul of the party! Good luck, i wish you well!

Do everything different! Don't put yourself at places where they serve alcoholic beverages. If your going to be with family, you can always find the courage to ask them to try a short period of time while you are visiting, to be alcoholic free. Its better for you and your future and congratulations your doing great keep up the good work!! Merry Christmas!

Darlin' this is NOT a time to be doing Christmas parties/dinners with "normies." You need to stick to spending the holidays with AA friends and only family members who can respect and support your recovery. Stir clear of all and everything else! It's your first year, don't place yourself in tempting environments!
