Basically C02 or Air comes from your tank into a regulator then into the front valve, when you pull the trigger the bolt and striker move forward, the striker pushes open the vale for a split second letting the C02 or air up into and through the bolt which blows the paintball out of the barrell. Read the articles. Pretty good I think.

C02 is basically a liquid-gas. If the C02 does not have space to expand to turn into a gas, the liquid can ruin your internals. Some guns like Spyders are made to run on C02 so they won't really mess up your internals. If you don't already have a expansion chamber on your gun get one because this will help the C02 expand .Guns like the Ion for example, cannot use C02 or they will mess up your gun. This is why there is compressed air or HPA tanks now which do not freeze up and ruin your gun. Guns that use HPA tanks need a regulator to help consistent pressure.

That is for a tippmann 98. All guns operate differently but generally speaking the co2 powers a bolt which is pushed backwards as the paintball is pushed forwards. Springs reset the bolt so that the gun can be fired again.

Does the tank have any air in it? you may wish a fill. additionally you won't be screwing the tank in some distance adequate for the air to continuously gas the gun. finally verify your marker and verify it has adequate lube or oil. The internals could be dry.
