I think dogs are more intelligent than many humans give them credit for.
Okay, no dog is going to come up with a theory to challenge Einstein's Relativity ... but I DO think they understand far more of the human language than we might assume. Obviously, many dogs learn basic commands. But I've noticed with my own dog that he often appears to be listening to conversations, and if, for example, he hears us talking about going out somewhere he isn't allowed, or he hears the word "bath" etc., he quietly wanders off and hides. On another occasion, a visitor (bothered by a small buzzing fly) shouted, "Go away you horrible thing." At which, my dog walk out of the room, went upstairs and refused to come down until she'd left!
Okay, it probably sounds a bit far-fetched ... but I also noticed that he recognises when a car is driving down the street that belongs to a family member, even when it's a good hundred metres or so away. Now, if he can recognise different engine sounds, (very subtle to us humans), then there's no reason why he can't differentiate between the various vocal sounds of words, and gradually learn to associate them with "things" in the same way he matches the sound of an approaching car to the arrival of certain people. In this way, he lets me know exactly WHO is on their way home, long before I could have any idea ... so I know he isn't picking up on any subtle subconscious cues from me.
Animals never cease to astonish me with their incredible natural talents!

The average dog has the intellect of a three (3) year old child. Having said that, I am sure that a dog is smarter than some humans...

BY FAR THE DOG IS SMARTER THAN HUMANS!!!
Dogs are truly loyal
They eat only what they need
They drink only to hydrate
They breed only to reproduce
They don't dwell over the past
They don't want for things they don't need
They protect yet discipline their young
They forgive the unforgivable
Can't think of too many humans that can fit that image!

Don't think dogs are smarter than people...(well it depends on who you compare them to) But sometimes I wonder if they have the sixth sense.

Depends what you call smart. Dogs are much better at reading body language and have assorted rituals and communications pretty much all dogs understand, they have evolved a hierarchical system which prevents massive wars and misunderstandings, their kids don't do drugs, they can survive without TV, and they happily live with people who do everything for them and keep them safe.
