When can and how difficult is it for an enlisted man to get a slot for airborne school? I'm looking to enlist soon, and airborne is one of my main aspirations. Yet, at the same time I'm also considering the marines, and was curious about airborne.

That's right, get it into your contract. ask for it. and yes they need airborne soldiers and marines. I never got it in my contract, but i went airborne when I got stationed at Ft Benning, home of the airborne school. So they used to give so many slots to Ft Benning soldiers stationed there. I was lucky so don't count on doing what I did. when I did go I'd say at least a third of our training class were marines. They also had air force, navy, ROTC cadets and females in the class, also privates, 1st sgts, Col, LT, all ranks. They also had chaplains cooks, mechanics, admin, medics, tankers,,,,,, you get my point?

The school is physically demanding and we didn't need pens and paper back then. Be able to run a decent 7-8 minute mile and make sure you can do plenty of push-ups and chin-ups. (don't forget sit-ups). It used to be a min of 42 push 45 sit ups and be able to pass the 2 mile run under 15:30 and do 6 chin-ups, I went a couple of decades ago so im sure its changed, good luck hope you make it!

Cruizer is almost right on the money, I went to Airborne school in 2001, and it seems not much has changed since he went through. I should dispell some things though... You can have just about any MOS and get Airborne in your contract prior to enlisting. Even if you already enlist without it, once you get to AIT you can let your Drill Sergeant know that you want to go Airborne and all you have to do is fill out a request and take the Airborne Physical. Best of luck to you, remember to keep your feet and knees together.

Airborne, All the way.

I say that you should join the marines. They are a lot better. I don't know much about airborn but both ways I hope you make a good choice. An d I thank you for serving this country.

Don't be like me and the other dumb asses, if you join sign up for a skill. I got out and was laughed out and it set me years behind my peers. Right now I am looking at knee replacement and when I read about the percentage of airborne and Special Forces who have leg problems you would think we would qualify for something. The government does not care about you now or when you join as you will find out, I hope you take some sane advice before you make the mistake of a lifetime. God Bless You and The Southern People.

Very easy, do real good in basic training and make sure your recruiter knows that you want airborne for A.I.T.

The reality is that actual airborne is an antiquated method of insertion that never has worked all that well. Even during Vietnam insertion was done by helicopter, so most airborne units are actually "air cav". (even if they don't want to admit it) ;)
