Do not defrost your turkey in the sink. Put it in the fridge for how ever many days (different sizes need different times, it should say on the package). If your bird is still icy on the inside on the day to cook, stick it in a sinkful of cold water (NEVER leave the bird at room temp for too long). Keep running cold water over it (and in it) until thawed completely. Pat it dry and then start working your magic with it. Good Luck! Happy Thanksgiving!!

If your turkey is already defrosted in the fridge, your turkey should only NEED to be in the sink long enough to rinse, unless you are soaking in a brine. Then it's at least an hour.
Defrosting in the sink is generally a bad idea by the way.

You shouldn't let the turkey rest in the sink unless you are running cold water over it in order to thaw it.
I highly suggest thawing it in the fridge since that is the safest way to thaw a turkey.

If you're starting with a frozen bird it will take several days of letting it thaw in the 'fridge. Take the bird out of the 'fridge early on the big day or possibly the night before, so it can finish thawing out and come to room temperature before cooking.

Never. Take defrosted bird out of the fridge, wash it well and put in roasting pan on a rack.

Long enough for it to thaw completely. When it is soft, then it is ready to prepare.
